This is what we call a live exhibition where the designer will set up his work in the entrance of the museum and use this space as his work base for the next few weeks. All the work is for sale.
Mannabein is the fruit of a several year long process of self inquisition through various means. Coming to terms with ‘being’ in a bigger and smaller context, creating harmony between external and internal reality. The aesthetics and connotations of the collection revealed themselves in small steps along the way and towards the end whiffs of Louisiana black magic, curanderos, the wild west along with eastern symbolism made a pot pourri marrying ideas of original and post industrial culture.
Every garment in the collection was knitted from soft cotton on a hand knitting machine aside from the felted hats which are traditional style hats from Pisac and Chinchero, villages in Peru. The rapé pipe and two sculptures used to display blankets and scarf were turned from mahogany.
Torfi graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2012 with a degree in fine arts and did an internship with the danish fashion designer Henrik Vibskov in 2014. Since then Torfi has been involved in several projects including music production. This collection is his first under the name Mannabein.
